How to Track AI Referral Traffic in GA4 (ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini)
To track AI referral traffic in GA4, first check the new native “AI Assistants” channel that Google added on 13 May 2026, found under Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. It automatically groups visits from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Then build a custom channel group with a source regex as a backup, because the native channel misses some platforms (Perplexity is often still logged as a referral) and a lot of real AI traffic lands in Direct. Treat the GA4 number as a floor, not the full picture.
More customers now ask an AI assistant before they ever open Google, which means people can find you, read about you and decide to call you without a single classic search result in between. That traffic used to be invisible, buried inside Referral or Direct. Here is how to pull it out and measure it.
What counts as AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is any visit to your website that starts from an AI assistant or AI answer engine. In practice that means someone clicks a link inside a chat answer and lands on one of your pages. The usual suspects are:
- ChatGPT (chatgpt.com and the older chat.openai.com)
- Google Gemini (gemini.google.com)
- Perplexity (perplexity.ai)
- Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com)
- Anthropic Claude (claude.ai)
- Smaller players such as you.com, poe.com and meta.ai
One important thing this is not: Google’s own AI Overviews. When someone clicks a link inside an AI Overview at the top of a normal Google results page, that visit keeps a google.com referrer and stays in Organic Search. It does not move into any AI channel, so it is not separable in GA4 today.
GA4 now has a native AI Assistants channel
This is the big change for 2026. On 13 May 2026, with rollout completing across accounts by early June, Google added a native AI Assistants default channel group to GA4. You no longer have to build everything by hand to see the basics.
When GA4 recognises the referrer as one of its listed AI assistants, it stamps the visit like this:
| Field | Value GA4 assigns |
|---|---|
| Default channel group | AI Assistants |
| Session medium | ai-assistant |
| Session campaign | (ai-assistant) |
Google’s recognised list consistently includes ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, and its current descriptions also mention Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok. Google does not publish the full list and can change it quietly, so do not assume every assistant is covered.
Where to find AI traffic in GA4, step by step
The quick view
Go to Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Look for an AI Assistants row in the channel table. If it is there, click it or add Session source as a secondary dimension to see which assistant is sending the visits. No setup needed.
The detailed view
For a proper breakdown, open Explore and build a free-form report:
- Set the dimension to Session source / medium.
- Add metrics for Sessions, Engaged sessions, Key events (conversions) and Engagement rate.
- Add a filter where Session source contains any of the AI domains above.
- Compare engagement and conversions against your other channels. AI visitors often arrive later in the buying journey and can convert well.
Build a custom channel group as a backup
The native channel is a great start, but you should still create your own custom channel group so nothing slips through. Go to Admin, Data display, Channel groups, create a new group, add a channel called AI Tools and use a source rule with this RE2 pattern:
chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|you\.com|poe\.com|meta\.ai
Two rules matter here. Match it against the Session source dimension, and place your AI Tools channel above Referral in the priority order. GA4 assigns each session to the first rule it matches, so if Referral sits higher, it will grab Perplexity before your AI channel ever sees it.
Run the native channel and your custom group side by side for a week or two, then decide which you trust as your headline figure. The native channel started fresh in May 2026, so avoid comparing straight across that date.
Why your real AI traffic is bigger than GA4 shows
Whatever GA4 reports, the true number is higher. Treat the AI figure as a lower bound, for these reasons:
- AI Overviews count as Organic Search. As above, Google’s own AI answers do not break out, so a chunk of AI influence hides inside your organic numbers.
- Perplexity is often still a Referral. In many accounts it has not moved into the native AI channel yet, which is exactly why the custom regex backup earns its place.
- Phone apps strip the referrer. When someone taps a link inside the ChatGPT or Gemini app, or an in-app browser, the referrer often disappears and the visit lands in Direct or Unassigned. A quiet rise in Direct can actually be AI traffic in disguise.
- Citations without clicks show nothing. If an assistant recommends your business by name but the user does not click, GA4 records zero, even though you just earned a warm lead.
The three layers of AI visibility
GA4 only measures the last of three stages. To understand your whole AI presence, think in layers:
| Layer | What it means | Where to measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl | AI bots reading your site | Server, CDN or hosting logs (look for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot) |
| Citation | Your brand named in AI answers | Dedicated AI visibility and mention-tracking tools |
| Click | Visits and conversions on your site | GA4 |
If you only watch GA4, you are watching the tip of the iceberg. The work that grows the click number happens at the crawl and citation layers, which is the heart of generative engine optimisation.
What UK trades should actually do about it
You do not need to become an analyst. Do these five things and you will be ahead of nearly every local competitor:
- Open Traffic acquisition and check for the AI Assistants row today, so you know your starting point.
- Build the custom channel group above so Perplexity and newer tools are caught.
- Watch Direct for unexplained growth, a hint of lost AI referrers.
- Make sure the pages AI is most likely to quote, your service and cost pages, answer real questions clearly. See our guide on getting recommended by AI search and on ranking in Google AI Overviews.
- Track the outcome that pays the bills, calls and enquiries, not just sessions. Read more on turning ChatGPT referrals into work.
Frequently asked questions
Does GA4 track ChatGPT traffic automatically?
Yes, since 13 May 2026 GA4 has a native AI Assistants channel that recognises ChatGPT and several other assistants automatically. You will still want a custom channel group to catch platforms it misses, such as Perplexity in many accounts.
Why is my AI traffic showing as Direct?
AI apps, in-app browsers, privacy settings and copied links often strip the referrer. With no referrer, GA4 cannot see where the visit came from, so it files it under Direct or Unassigned. This is the single biggest reason AI traffic is undercounted.
Can I see traffic from Google AI Overviews in GA4?
Not separately. Clicks from AI Overviews keep a google.com referrer and stay inside Organic Search, so they inflate your organic figures rather than appearing in the AI channel.
How do I know if AI is recommending my business?
GA4 only shows clicks, not mentions. To see whether assistants name your business in their answers, use a dedicated AI visibility tool, and check your server logs to confirm AI bots are crawling your site in the first place.
Want AI to send you leads, not just show you a number?
