Unavoidable Marketing - Get cited by ChatGPT

By Andrew Heppinstall – Founder, Unavoidable Marketing – 29 July 2026

Something interesting has happened over the last twelve months, and most UK service businesses have not noticed it yet. A meaningful chunk of the enquiries landing in inboxes and phone lines are no longer coming from Google. They are coming from ChatGPT.

The numbers are not small either. ChatGPT now accounts for roughly 77% of all AI referral traffic to websites. Users who click through from an AI answer spend an average of 15 minutes on the destination site (versus 8 from Google), view 12 pages per visit (versus 9), and convert at around 15.9% on transactional pages (versus about 1.76% from Google organic). That is a nearly 9x conversion rate.

Yet 47% of brands still have no strategy for showing up in AI answers at all. If you run a service business in the UK, that gap is the single biggest opportunity in front of you right now. This post is about what that actually looks like in practice.

Why AI referral traffic converts so much better than Google

The mechanics are simple once you think about it. A Google search returns ten blue links. The user is still shopping. Half the time they open three tabs, compare, and abandon two of them. Nobody has committed to anything.

An AI answer is different. By the time ChatGPT has recommended a business, the user has usually described their problem in detail, had a short back-and-forth, and asked something like “who should I actually call for this?”. The pre-qualification has already happened inside the conversation. When they click through, they are not comparing five options – they are deciding whether to call.

That is why the 15-minute dwell time and near-9x conversion rate are not flukes. AI referrals arrive warmer. The question is whether your business is one of the ones being recommended.

How ChatGPT (and Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews) actually pick who to cite

There is no ranking algorithm in the traditional Google sense. Instead, a large language model reads a batch of sources, extracts what looks like the most trustworthy, specific and structured answer to the user’s question, and cites the sources it leaned on. Four things massively increase the chance you are in that batch:

  • Answering the question directly. Not “we offer boiler repair services across the UK” – “boiler repairs in Leeds start at around £X and usually take between 1 and 3 hours depending on the fault”.
  • Structured content it can lift cleanly. Clear H2s, short paragraphs, bulleted lists, FAQ blocks with the exact question phrased naturally.
  • Named specifics. Places, prices, timescales, part numbers, brand names, real case examples. LLMs prefer sources that commit to specifics because vague pages could be about anything.
  • Corroboration elsewhere. Being mentioned in directory listings, review sites, industry publications and Reddit-style discussions gives the model more signals that you are a real, referenced business – not just a page about yourself.

The 5 things to change on your website this quarter

None of this requires a rebuild. It is mostly rewriting.

1. Add a “quick answers” block near the top of every service page

Three to five sentences that plainly state: what the service is, roughly what it costs, roughly how long it takes, and who it is for. AI systems love this format because it is easy to lift and cite.

2. Rewrite your FAQs as real questions people actually type

“How much does it cost?” is fine, but “How much does a new boiler cost to fit in Leeds in 2026?” is what someone actually asks. Match the phrasing to real search behaviour and answer in one tight paragraph before expanding.

3. Publish price ranges, not “get in touch for a quote”

The single most common reason a service business gets skipped by an AI answer is that no page on their site commits to any number. You do not have to give a fixed price – a range is enough. “Between £X and £Y depending on scope” is far more citable than silence.

4. Add a proper About page with people, dates and locations named

LLMs and their retrieval systems weight entity signals heavily. A page that names the founder, the team, the address, the year the business was set up, and the areas served gives them something to hang your identity on. Vague homepages get skipped.

5. Get mentioned on pages that are not yours

Industry directories, local business listings, guest posts, podcast interviews, review sites, Reddit threads answering questions in your space. Every off-site mention strengthens the corroboration signal. This is old SEO advice in a new context – and it matters more, not less, now.

When AI search is not the right thing to worry about

Two situations where I would actively tell a business to leave GEO alone for now:

  • You are still not showing up in Google local at all. If your Google Business Profile is bare and you are invisible in the local 3-pack, fix that first. GEO is a compounding advantage, but local search is still where the bulk of “I need this now” enquiries come from.
  • Your average job value is very low and lead volume is fine. If you have more work than you can handle from Facebook groups and word of mouth, do not distract yourself. GEO is a 3 to 6 month bet.

For everyone else – and that is most B2B and higher-value service businesses in the UK – this is a genuine window. The competitors who get their pages restructured this year will be the ones ChatGPT keeps recommending in 2027. The ones who wait will be trying to catch up.

How we approach this for clients

Our SEO work now includes what we internally call the “AI answer audit” as standard. We take your top 10 service pages, look at exactly what a well-phrased ChatGPT question would need in order to cite you, and rewrite the pages to fill those gaps. It is not a separate service – it is what modern SEO looks like.

If you would like an honest read on where your site sits today – how likely it is to be cited by ChatGPT for the questions your customers are actually asking – it is one of the things we cover in our free, no-obligation audit. No pitch deck, no pressure. Call us on 07749 941 111 or request your free audit here.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT actually send real enquiries to small UK businesses?

Yes, and the traffic is growing quickly. Because it is warmer than Google organic and pre-qualified through the conversation, even modest volumes tend to convert well.

Do I need a special ChatGPT plugin or listing?

No. ChatGPT and other LLM tools pull from the open web (plus their retrieval sources). You do not “submit” to them. You make yourself easier to cite by restructuring your pages.

How long does it take to see results?

Brands that get the fundamentals right typically see measurable citation increases within 8 to 10 weeks. It is a compounding effect – the more you appear, the more you appear.

Is this replacing traditional SEO?

No. It is layering on top of it. The good news is that the practices are highly overlapping: a page structured to be cited by ChatGPT tends to also rank better in Google, especially in AI Overviews.

What if my industry is very local?

You still benefit. LLMs answer thousands of location-specific questions every day (“best plumber in Leeds”, “which accountant should I use in Wakefield”). Local businesses that publish structured, specific content are being picked up.
