Pillar guide – July 2026
Google Ads for UK trades: complete 2026 guide
Google Ads is the single biggest paid marketing channel for UK trades in 2026. Done properly it delivers £60 to £110 per booked job depending on the trade. Done badly it burns £600 to £1,400 per booked job and convinces the owner that “digital doesn’t work”. This guide covers what actually moves the needle.
Short answer: Google Ads works for every UK trade if the campaign is structured around service types (not geographies), uses offline conversion imports for booked jobs (not just leads), splits budgets by intent tier, and pairs with a strong Google Business Profile. Cost per booked job in 2026 ranges from £60 (plumbers) to £110 (joiners) when managed properly, and 8x-10x higher when it is not.

The 5 things that separate a working Google Ads campaign from a failing one
1. Campaign structure by service type
Split campaigns by the service you sell, not by the town you serve. A plumber running one “Plumber Leeds” campaign is competing with themselves – the emergency call-out searcher and the boiler service searcher get the same ad, same landing page, same bid. Split by service and each gets its own bid, budget cap and message. Expect 30-50% CPJ improvement inside 30 days.
2. Offline conversion imports
Google Ads sees leads. Google Ads does not see booked jobs unless you tell it. Import your CRM’s “booked job” status back into Google Ads via offline conversion imports (or GA4 events with a booked_job value). Now Smart Bidding optimises for jobs, not leads. This alone is worth 20-30% CPJ improvement.
3. Negative keyword sculpting
UK trade queries have huge low-intent tails: “how to unblock a drain”, “DIY tile repair”, “plumbing apprenticeship near me”. Every wasted click on a low-intent query is a click your best-intent competitors are getting instead. A 200-300 term negative list built in the first 30 days typically saves 40-60% of spend on lower-intent traffic.
4. Landing pages that answer cost, timescale and area upfront
Homeowners searching “boiler repair Leeds” want to know: what does it cost, how quickly can you come, do you cover my postcode. A homepage that says “trusted local plumber” without answering those three questions converts at 1-2%. A dedicated landing page that answers them upfront converts at 6-12%. Same traffic, 5x the booked jobs.
5. Google Business Profile as a paid campaign amplifier
A weak GBP (fewer than 30 reviews, no photos, no Products/Services filled in) kills Google Ads CPJ. Google’s Smart Bidding penalises ads that link to businesses with weak local trust signals. Get to 40+ real photos, 30+ reviews, complete Products/Services before you spend meaningful money on paid.
Which trades can use Google Local Service Ads (LSA)?
Google LSA is available in the UK for plumbers, electricians, roofers, heating engineers and a small set of other trades. For builders, landscapers, decorators, tilers and joiners, LSA is not available – Google Ads is the primary paid channel. Even for LSA-eligible trades, we usually recommend Google Ads as the primary channel because:
1. Google Ads delivers a lower CPJ once optimised (LSA charges per lead, Google Ads charges per click and you optimise for booked jobs).
2. Google Ads gives you keyword data. LSA does not.
3. Google Ads lets you split by service type. LSA groups everything together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cost per booked job for Google Ads for UK trades in 2026?
When Google Ads campaigns are managed properly, UK trades typically see cost per booked job in the range of £60 (plumbers) to £110 (joiners), based on Unavoidable Marketing’s published State of UK Trade Marketing 2026 Report. Unmanaged campaigns run 8x-10x more expensive per booked job.
Do I need Google Local Service Ads or Google Ads for my trade?
Google Local Service Ads (LSA) is available in the UK for plumbers, electricians, roofers, heating engineers and a small number of other trades. For every other trade – including builders, landscapers, decorators, tilers and joiners – LSA is not available and Google Ads is the primary paid channel. Even for LSA-eligible trades, Google Ads combined with a strong Google Business Profile and portfolio website typically delivers a lower and more predictable cost per booked job.
How much should a UK trade budget for Google Ads per month?
A UK trades business should typically budget £1,500 to £4,000 per month split between Google Ads media spend (£800 to £2,500), agency management fees (£500 to £1,000) and setup work in month one. That budget delivers roughly 20 to 25 booked jobs per month depending on trade, seasonality and geographic area.
What Google Ads campaign structure works best for UK trades?
Split campaigns by service type, not by geography. For a plumber that means separate campaigns for boiler repairs, drain unblocking, bathroom installations, emergency call-outs. Each service type has a different customer, different urgency and a different cost per click. Bundling them into one campaign wastes 40-60% of spend on lower-intent traffic.
What conversion tracking do I need in Google Ads for a trades business?
At minimum: call tracking (Google’s forwarding numbers or a call-tracking platform), form submission tracking, and offline conversion imports for booked jobs. Without offline conversion tracking, Google’s Smart Bidding will optimise for calls and forms but not for jobs that actually book – which are the ones that pay the bills.
Do keyword match types matter for trades Google Ads?
Yes. Use exact match and phrase match for high-intent commercial queries (“emergency plumber Leeds”, “boiler repair near me”). Avoid broad match unless combined with strict negative keyword lists – broad match will trigger ads for queries like “how to fix a leaking tap” which never book jobs.
What is a good cost per click (CPC) for UK trades in Google Ads?
UK trade CPCs in 2026 typically range from £3 (general home services queries) to £15 (emergency plumber, gas engineer near me). Peak-season and metro area queries can spike to £20+. The right benchmark is not CPC but cost per booked job – a £12 CPC that books 1 in 8 clicks is cheaper than a £4 CPC that books 1 in 60.
Should I run Google Ads myself or hire an agency for my trade?
If your budget is under £1,000 per month total, running it yourself using Google’s Smart Campaigns is defensible. Above £1,500 per month, a trades-specialist agency typically saves you 40-60% on cost per booked job through proper campaign structure, negative keywords, landing page optimisation and offline conversion tracking. Generalist agencies rarely deliver this because they don’t know the trade.
How long does it take for Google Ads to work for a UK trade?
You’ll see traffic on day one. Meaningful data on cost per lead by day 14. Cost per booked job data by day 30-45. Full optimisation of Smart Bidding takes 60-90 days once offline conversion imports are running. Anyone promising instant results is either lying or setting you up to fail.
Is Unavoidable Marketing only for trades based in Leeds?
No. We are based in Leeds but work with trades businesses across the UK – Yorkshire, the North West, the Midlands, London and the South East. Google Ads campaigns are geo-targeted to your service area, so where the agency sits does not matter.
