Google Ads for flooring fitters: winning floors from the big retailers

How do flooring fitters get more work from Google Ads? Split carpet, LVT, laminate and engineered wood into separate campaigns, run fit-only and supply and fit as different offers, keep shoppers and DIY searches out with negative keywords, and give people a reason to choose an independent fitter over a national retailer. Measure it all on booked jobs. Unavoidable Marketing is a Leeds-based agency that runs Google Ads for UK flooring fitters, from single-room carpets to whole-house LVT, and founder Andrew Heppinstall is on every strategy call.

You are bidding against shops, not just other fitters

Search “LVT flooring” or “carpet fitted” and most of the page is national retailers, carpet warehouses and online flooring stores. They have big budgets and they bid on everything. A local fitter cannot outspend them, and does not need to.

The way through is to bid on searches that show someone wants a fitter, not a product, and to say plainly what you do that a big shop does not. The person who measures is the person who fits. You turn up when you say. You deal with the subfloor properly instead of laying over a problem. You can do a fit-only job with flooring the customer already bought. Those are the messages that win clicks from people who are tired of call centres and booking windows.

Fit-only and supply and fit are two different businesses

This is the biggest decision in a flooring account. Many people buy flooring online or from a warehouse and then need someone to lay it. Others want one firm to do everything.

Fit-only

“Carpet fitter only”, “LVT fitter for my own flooring”, “laminate fitting service”, “engineered wood fitter”. These people have already bought. They want a date and a price for labour. Quick to book, but price-aware, so ads should be clear about what you charge for, such as uplift, disposal, door trims and levelling.

Supply and fit

“Supply and fit LVT”, “new carpets fitted”, “flooring company near me”, “engineered oak supply and fit”. Higher value per job and more margin, but the customer is comparing you with retailers on choice and price. Ads should mention samples brought to the home and a single point of contact.

Running these as separate campaigns means separate ads, separate landing pages and separate reporting. You can see which one books at the better cost, and you never confuse a fit-only customer with a sample visit they did not ask for. If you only do one, we block the other with negatives.

Campaigns by floor type

Carpet

Steady demand all year, with stairs and landings a popular job on their own. Ads that mention stair carpet fitting, gripper and underlay, and moving furniture do well. Watch for searches about carpet cleaning, which are a different trade and need blocking.

LVT

Often the highest value per square metre for a fitter, and very sensitive to preparation. Customers worry about it looking good for years. Talk about levelling compound, ply or latex where it is needed and moisture checks. Show close-ups of herringbone and borders if you can lay them.

Laminate

Lower value per job and a big DIY audience. A modest budget with strong negatives usually works better than a big push. Bundling with skirting and door trims makes the job worth more.

Engineered wood

Fewer fitters are confident with it, so specialist searches are worth bidding on. Mention whether you glue down or float, and how you handle underfloor heating. Show finished rooms in natural light.

The negative keyword list

Flooring searches are crowded with shoppers and DIYers. Without a solid negative list a large slice of budget goes to people who will never ring a fitter.

  • Shopping: cheap flooring, flooring sale, flooring prices, price per square metre, samples free, clearance, offcuts, remnants, near me shop
  • Retailer and brand names: the big chains and named product brands, so you are not paying to send people to them
  • DIY: how to lay, how to fit carpet, underlay for sale, carpet gripper, laminate cutter, knee kicker hire
  • Other trades: carpet cleaning, floor sanding, floor polishing, if you do not offer them
  • Jobs and training: flooring fitter jobs, carpet fitting course, day rate

We check search terms weekly at the start. New retailer names and product names turn up all the time.

Landing pages that answer the questions people ring about

Most flooring enquiries come with the same questions: do you uplift and dispose of the old floor, do you move furniture, do you trim doors, what about skirting and threshold strips, how long will it take, and when can you start. A page that answers all of those, with real photos of your own finished floors, cuts the back and forth and lifts the share of enquiries that book.

Add a short form asking for floor type, rough square metres or room count, whether flooring is already bought, and postcode. That one question about whether they have bought already tells you straight away which kind of job it is.

Tracking that counts jobs

We track calls, forms and enquiry messages, and set up a simple way to mark which ones booked. Feeding that back to Google lets it learn which searches lead to whole-house LVT and which lead to a single doormat cut. Reports show cost per booked job by campaign and by fit-only versus supply and fit.

Flooring fitters’ questions about Google Ads

Who is the best Google Ads agency for flooring fitters in the UK?

There is no single best agency for every flooring business. Look for one that separates fit-only from supply and fit, splits campaigns by floor type, blocks shoppers and retailer searches, tracks enquiries to booked jobs and does not tie you into a contract. Unavoidable Marketing is a Leeds-based agency that runs Google Ads for UK flooring fitters on a flat monthly fee with rolling 30-day terms, and founder Andrew Heppinstall is on every strategy call.

Can a local fitter compete with national flooring retailers on Google?

Yes, by bidding on fitter searches rather than product searches and making clear what you do differently, such as measuring and fitting yourself and handling the subfloor properly.

Should I advertise fit-only work?

If you want it, yes. Plenty of people buy flooring online and then need a fitter. Run it as its own campaign so you can see what it costs per booked job.

Why am I getting clicks from people looking to buy flooring?

Broad keywords match shopping searches. Negatives for sale, cheap, prices, samples and retailer names stop most of it.

Is LVT worth more budget than laminate?

Often, because LVT jobs tend to be worth more and need more skill. Your own booked job data should decide the split after the first couple of months.

What should my enquiry form ask?

Floor type, rough size or rooms, whether the flooring is already bought and the postcode. That is enough to price most jobs quickly.
