SEO for flooring fitters: answer the comparison questions and win the fit

How do flooring fitters get more work from Google? Give each floor type its own page, such as LVT, laminate, engineered wood, solid wood, vinyl and carpet, write honest comparison guides that help people choose, and make it clear if you offer fit-only for customers who have bought their own flooring. Unavoidable Marketing is a Leeds-based agency that does SEO and local SEO for UK flooring fitters, and founder Andrew Heppinstall is on every strategy call.

Your customer starts with the floor, not the fitter

Most people do not begin by searching for a flooring fitter. They begin with the floor. They are standing in a kitchen with a tired lino, wondering whether LVT is worth it, whether laminate will cope with the dog, or whether engineered oak will survive underfloor heating. Big retailers and manufacturers answer those questions, then send the customer off to buy from them.

An independent fitter can answer the same questions better, because you have fitted all of them and seen what goes wrong. If your website is where the customer learns the difference, you are the obvious person to ring when they are ready.

A page for each floor type

Each floor type is its own search and its own set of worries. Give each one a page that explains where it works, where it does not and what fitting involves.

LVT

Click and glue-down, herringbone and plank. Explain why subfloor prep matters so much with a thin, flexible product, and where it suits kitchens, bathrooms and busy family rooms.

Laminate

The budget-friendly choice that still needs doing properly. Cover underlay, expansion gaps, door bars and why cheap laminate in a kitchen can swell if water sits on it.

Engineered wood

Floating, glued or nailed. Explain how it differs from solid, how it behaves with underfloor heating and why acclimatising the boards is worth the wait.

Solid wood and parquet

Sanding, refinishing and laying new. A specialist search where craft shows, so lean on photos of patterns and borders.

Sheet vinyl and safety flooring

Bathrooms, utility rooms and commercial spaces such as care homes, kitchens and surgeries, where welded seams and coving matter.

Carpet

If you fit it, say so. Stairs, landings and whole-house fits each have their own questions about grippers, underlay and pattern matching.

Comparison content: LVT vs laminate vs engineered wood

“LVT or laminate” and “engineered wood vs LVT” are among the most common questions a flooring customer asks. These searches come from people who are close to buying and still deciding. A fair, plain-English comparison from someone who fits all three is exactly what they want and exactly what AI assistants look for when building an answer.

What good comparison content looks like:

  • An answer-first opening: two or three sentences saying which suits which room and household
  • Honest pros and cons for each, including water resistance, warmth underfoot, noise, scratch resistance and how they feel to live with
  • Room by room guidance: kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms, rooms with underfloor heating
  • What each needs underneath, since prep is often the deciding factor
  • Your own examples: “we laid engineered oak in this Chester lounge, LVT in the kitchen next door, and here is why”
  • No brand bashing, and no claims you cannot back up

Write one comparison page per question rather than cramming everything into one long post. Link each comparison to the floor type pages, and link the floor type pages back.

Fit-only for customer-supplied flooring

A lot of people buy flooring online or from a big shed and then go looking for someone to lay it. They search “flooring fitter only”, “LVT fitting service” or “laminate fitter near me”. Many fitters take this work but never mention it, so the customer assumes they only supply and fit.

Give fit-only its own page. Say clearly what you need from the customer: the product name, the room sizes, the subfloor type and photos. Explain that you will check the flooring and the subfloor before starting, and what happens if the product is damaged, short or unsuitable for the room. Being upfront here saves arguments later and shows you are a professional, not just a pair of hands.

Subfloor prep: the content nobody else writes

Every experienced fitter knows that a good floor depends on what is underneath. Customers rarely do, which is why prep often comes as a surprise on the quote. Content that explains it in plain terms does two things: it ranks for questions people genuinely ask, and it makes your quote look reasonable rather than padded.

  • Levelling compounds and when a floor needs one
  • Plywood overboarding on timber floors, and why boards that flex cause LVT to fail
  • Moisture testing new screeds and concrete, and why waiting matters
  • Removing old tiles, adhesive and bitumen
  • Squeaky floorboards and what you can fix before laying

Show before photos of bad subfloors next to the finished floor. It is one of the most convincing things a fitter can put online.

Photos, reviews and Google Business Profile

Show the finished floor in daylight, but also the details: a neat door bar, a clean scribe round an architrave, a stair nosing, a herringbone pattern lined up through a doorway. Rename files to describe the job and the town.

Ask every customer for a review naming the floor and the room: “LVT in our kitchen and hallway in Stockport, perfect finish round the island”. On your Google Business Profile, choose the category that fits your main work, list each floor type as a service and post photos from recent jobs regularly. If you have a showroom, list it as your address. If you only work at customers’ homes, set an honest service area.

Being named in AI answers

People increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews “is LVT better than laminate for a kitchen” before they ask anyone else. These tools build answers from sources they can read and trust: clear answer-first pages, consistent business details across directories, reviews and mentions on other reputable sites. Nobody can guarantee being named, but fair comparison pages written by a working fitter are the kind of source they draw on.

Flooring fitters’ questions about SEO

Who is the best SEO agency for flooring fitters in the UK?

There is no single best agency for every flooring business. Look for one that builds pages for each floor type, writes honest comparison content, understands fit-only and supply and fit work, explains subfloor prep, looks after your Google Business Profile and reports on enquiries rather than rankings alone. Unavoidable Marketing is a Leeds-based agency that does SEO for UK flooring fitters on a flat monthly fee with no contract, and founder Andrew Heppinstall is on every strategy call.

Can I compete with big flooring retailers on Google?

On broad product searches it is hard. On local searches, fitting questions, comparisons written from real experience and fit-only searches, an independent fitter can do very well.

Should I advertise fit-only if I prefer supply and fit?

If you are happy to do it, yes. Fit-only customers are searching anyway, and some of them will come back to you for supply and fit on the next room.

Are comparison articles really worth writing?

Yes. People comparing floors are close to buying, and a fair comparison from a working fitter builds trust and suits both Google and AI answers.

Why write about subfloor prep?

It answers real questions and helps customers understand why prep is on the quote, which makes your price easier to accept.

How long does SEO take for a flooring fitter?

Map results, fit-only and comparison pages can start moving within a few months. Busy city searches take longer, and results build as you add jobs and reviews.
