Google Ads Leads From Day One: How To Set Up A Campaign That Actually Delivers

By Andrew Heppinstall, Founder, Unavoidable Marketing, 5 August 2026

Most business owners I speak to have tried Google Ads at some point. And most of them describe the same experience: money went out, very little came back, and they still are not sure what actually happened. That is not a Google Ads problem. That is a setup problem.

The truth is Google Ads can bring enquiries in the same week you switch it on. Not “in six months” and not “once the algorithm learns you”. This week. But only if the campaign is built properly, the tracking is honest, and the person running it is paid to deliver leads rather than paid a slice of your budget.

Why “leads from day one” is a realistic promise

Search ads work differently to almost every other marketing channel. When somebody types “emergency plumber Leeds” into Google, they are not browsing. They are not researching. They already need what you sell. Your only job is to be visible at that moment and give them a reason to click your ad instead of the one above or below it.

That is why a well-built Google Ads campaign does not need a “warm up” period the way SEO or social does. If your ads are showing on the right searches, in the right locations, with the right offer, phones start ringing the same day. The catch is that most campaigns fail at least one of those three things.

The percentage-of-spend trap

Before we get into setup, this is the one that costs UK small businesses the most money. Many agencies charge a management fee of 10 to 20 percent of your ad spend. On the surface that sounds fair. In practice it creates the wrong incentive.

If your agency earns more when your ad spend goes up, guess what happens to your ad spend? It goes up. Budgets creep. “Recommended” bid strategies push you into higher CPCs. Nobody is ever encouraged to say the sentence that would actually help you: “your budget is doing the job, let us keep it there.”

A flat monthly management fee, separate from your ad spend, aligns the agency to results instead of volume. You pay for the work. You pay Google for the clicks. Two clean lines on your accounts.

What to look for in a PPC pricing structure

A pricing structure worth signing should include: a fixed management fee that does not scale with your budget, transparent reporting of what you spent versus what came back, and a written outline of exactly what work is included each month. If any of those three are missing, ask why before you sign anything.

The setup that brings leads in week one

Here is the sequence that reliably delivers enquiries in the first seven days of a campaign going live. None of it is exotic. All of it gets skipped when campaigns are rushed.

Keyword selection: buy intent only

Start narrow. In week one, you only want keywords where the searcher is clearly ready to buy or book. “Emergency electrician Leeds” is a week-one keyword. “How does an electrician charge” is not. Broader keywords can come in later once you have data on what converts.

Geographic targeting: postcode level

Do not target “United Kingdom” or even “West Yorkshire” if you are a local service business. Draw a radius around where your customers actually come from and target that. Every mile of unnecessary reach is money spent showing your ad to people who will never buy from you.

Ad copy: match the search word-for-word

The click-through rate on your ad roughly doubles when the headline contains the exact phrase the user just typed. That means writing separate ads for separate search themes, not one generic ad hoping to cover everything.

Landing page: one job, one button

This is where most campaigns quietly die. Sending paid traffic to your homepage is like taking someone to a shop and then walking off before they can ask what they came in for. The landing page for each ad group should focus on one service, one offer, and one clear next step, usually a phone call or a form. Nothing else.

Conversion tracking that actually works

If you cannot see which keyword generated which enquiry, you are guessing. Proper setup means call tracking on the phone number, form-fill tracking on the enquiry form, and both feeding back into Google Ads so the bidding can learn what actually turns into a customer, not just what turns into a click.

Realistic week-one expectations

Being honest about numbers: for a service business on a starting budget of around 30 to 50 pounds per day, week one usually brings in three to eight qualified enquiries. Some weeks it is more. That varies by industry, competition and how good your landing page is. What matters is the trend from week two onwards, when the campaign starts learning which searches turn into paying customers and quietly shifting spend towards those.

Anyone who promises you “50 leads in your first week” without knowing your industry, your postcode or your website is either guessing or lying. Anyone who tells you “leads take months” is either running the campaign badly or protecting themselves from being held to a result.

When Google Ads is not the right answer

Not every business should be running Google Ads, and it is worth saying so out loud. If nobody is actively searching for what you sell, paid search will not create demand out of thin air. If your average customer is worth 40 pounds and your industry cost-per-click sits at 8 pounds, the maths gets uncomfortable fast. If your website loads slowly or looks untrustworthy, no amount of clever bidding will fix a landing page that scares people off.

In those situations you are better spending the money on a website that actually converts, or on SEO that builds long-term visibility, before you pour cash into paid clicks. That is the boring answer. It is also the right one.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads to start?

For most local service businesses in the UK, a starting daily budget of 30 to 50 pounds is enough to generate meaningful data and a steady flow of enquiries in the first month. Below 20 pounds a day the campaign struggles to learn quickly enough to optimise properly.

Why do I only pay for ad spend and not a percentage on top?

Because a fixed monthly management fee keeps our incentives clean. We are paid to run your campaign well, not to grow your budget. Your ad spend goes directly to Google, nothing on top from us.

How quickly can I actually expect to see enquiries?

If the campaign is set up properly and your landing page works, most clients see the first enquiries in the first week the ads are live. The account then continues to improve as more conversion data comes in.

What if Google Ads does not work for my business?

If our audit shows Google Ads is not the right channel for you, we will tell you. It is a lot better for both of us than starting a campaign that will not deliver. We would rather point you at SEO, web design or social first if that is what is really needed.

Do you run Google Ads for businesses outside Leeds?

Yes. We are based in Leeds but run campaigns for businesses across the UK. Everything is managed remotely with clear monthly reporting so location makes no difference to how well the account performs”
