To show up in Google AI Mode and Perplexity as a local business, you need the same foundations that win in normal search: pages Google and Perplexity can crawl and index, clear answers to the questions customers actually ask, and a complete, accurate Google Business Profile. There is no special file, schema or sign-up that gets you in. The businesses that get named are the ones whose details are easy to find, easy to trust and consistent everywhere.
Every claim below about how the tools behave comes from Google’s and Perplexity’s own documentation, read on 23 October 2026.
What are Google AI Mode and Perplexity?
Google AI Mode is a conversational search tab inside Google. It started rolling out in the UK on 28 July 2025, as a tab on the results page and in the Google app. Google says it breaks a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once on the searcher’s behalf.
Perplexity is a separate answer engine. You ask a question, it searches the web and replies with a written answer that links to the pages it used.
For a plumber, roofer or electrician, the practical difference from normal search is simple. A customer asking “who fixes a leaking flat roof near Wakefield, and what should I ask them?” may get a short answer that names two or three businesses and links to a handful of pages. If your business is not one of them, you are not on the shortlist.
How does Google AI Mode decide which businesses to show?
Google’s guide to optimising for generative AI features (last updated 10 July 2026) is the clearest statement we have. Three points matter most for local firms.
It draws on Google’s normal search index
AI Mode and AI Overviews use what Google calls query fan-out: the model generates a set of related searches and pulls pages from the Search index to ground its answer. To be eligible, Google says a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet”. If a page is not indexed, it cannot be cited, however good it is.
Your Google Business Profile feeds the answer
The same guide says Google Business Profiles “can help your products and services to be visible” in AI responses. For a trade, that makes your categories, services, service areas and hours worth getting exactly right.
Links are becoming more prominent
On 15 October 2026 Google said it had made “continued and substantial increases” to inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and is showing them higher in answers more often. It is also testing a section that highlights official pages for tasks where there are only one or two official places to go.
How does Perplexity find and cite local businesses?
Perplexity’s crawler documentation names two visitors you may see in your website logs:
- PerplexityBot, which Perplexity says “is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity”. It recommends allowing PerplexityBot in your site’s robots.txt file if you want to appear.
- Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a user’s question needs it and includes a link to that page in the response.
Perplexity also says PerplexityBot is not used to collect content for training AI models. So if a web developer or security plugin has blocked “AI bots” across the board, check that it has not blocked PerplexityBot too. Blocking it can remove you from the very answers you want to be in.
Because Perplexity links to the pages behind its answers, a clear service page with your trade, the towns you cover and plain answers to common questions gives it something worth citing.
Want to know where your business shows on Google?
We will search for your trade in your area, show you what a customer sees, including in Google’s AI answers, and tell you the three things we would fix first. It is free, with no obligation.
What should a UK trade business do first?
1. Finish your Google Business Profile properly
Pick the most accurate primary category, list the services you want enquiries for, and set your service areas. Google’s help page on service areas allows up to 20 areas, set by town, city or postcode rather than a radius, and advises keeping the whole area within about two hours’ drive of your base. If customers do not visit your premises, Google says to remove your address from the profile. Our guide to Google Business Profile for tradesmen walks through each field.
2. Give each service its own clear answer page
AI answers are built from pages that respond to specific questions. “Boiler repair in Harrogate: what it covers, how quickly we can attend, what affects the cost” is far easier to cite than a single services page listing twelve jobs in one paragraph. Open each page with a two or three sentence answer, then the detail.
3. Make sure the pages can be found
Check in Search Console that your key pages are indexed. Check your robots.txt and any security plugin are not blocking Googlebot or PerplexityBot. If a page has a “noindex” tag or is missing from your sitemap, fix that before anything else.
4. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, phone number and service area should match on your website, your profile and the directories you are listed on. Our local citations and NAP consistency guide shows how to tidy this up.
5. Earn genuine mentions
Being mentioned on trusted local and trade sites, such as a trade association directory, a local business group or a supplier’s case study, gives answer engines more evidence that you are real and relevant. These have to be earned, never bought.
What can you skip?
Google’s guide is unusually direct here. It says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, and that structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search”. Structured data is still worth having for other search features, but it is not a ticket into AI answers. If someone is selling you an llms.txt file as the fix, read our honest answer on llms.txt first.
How do you know if it is working?
Google’s guide points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console to see how their content appears in these features. Pair that with your analytics: our guide to tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 shows how to separate visits from Perplexity and other AI tools. Then do the simplest check of all: ask every new customer how they found you, and write it down.
AI answers change from one search to the next, so judge progress over weeks, not on a single search.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode available in the UK?
Yes. Google began rolling it out in the UK on 28 July 2025, in Search and the Google app.
Do I have to pay or apply to appear in AI Mode or Perplexity?
No. Google’s guide sets the same basic requirements as normal search: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in your robots.txt file.
Can anyone guarantee my business will be named?
No. Google notes that meeting its requirements does not guarantee a page will be crawled, indexed or shown. Anyone promising a guaranteed AI mention is promising something no one controls.
Is this different from ranking in AI Overviews?
The foundations are the same, because both use Google’s index. Our guide on ranking in Google AI Overviews as a local business covers that side in more detail.
