Google Business Profile for tradesmen: get into the map results and stay there
By Andrew Heppinstall, founder of Unavoidable Marketing, Leeds. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Your Google Business Profile decides whether you appear in the three map results for searches like plumber near me, and Google’s AI answers lean on it heavily. For a trade business the essentials are: the right primary category, every service listed, a service area instead of a public home address, real photos of your work, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Unavoidable Marketing sets up and manages profiles for UK trades from Leeds.
The six things that matter most
1. The right primary category
Plumber, Electrician, Roofing contractor, Heating contractor and so on. It is the single biggest setting. Add secondary categories only for work you genuinely do.
2. Service area, not your home address
If customers do not visit you, hide your address and set the towns you cover. Showing a home address as a shop front is one of the most common reasons trade profiles get suspended.
3. Every service listed
List each job you want to be found for, with a short description: boiler repair, consumer unit upgrade, flat roof repair. Google uses these to match searches.
4. Real photos, added regularly
Before and after shots of your own jobs, your van and your team. No stock images.
5. Genuine reviews, steadily
Ask every happy customer, every time, with a direct review link or QR code. Never buy, swap or write reviews: fake reviews have been illegal in the UK since April 2025.
6. Posts and answers
Short weekly posts about recent jobs and seasonal work, and clear answers to the questions customers ask, keep the profile active and give AI answers more to work with.
My Google Business Profile is suspended. What now?
- Do not create a new profile. Duplicates make things worse.
- Check the usual causes: a home address shown publicly, keywords or town names stuffed into the business name, a category you do not really offer, or a recent change to name or address.
- Fix the cause first, then appeal through Google’s Business Profile appeals tool with evidence: a utility bill or business bank statement, your van or signage, your website and company or trade registration.
- Expect video verification. Have your tools, van, signage and proof of address ready to show on camera.
If you are stuck, our free Google profile check will tell you what to fix.
How to get more Google reviews as a tradesperson
- Ask in person at the end of the job, when the customer is happiest.
- Send your review link by text the same day. A QR code on your invoice or van helps too.
- Ask everyone, not just the customers you expect to be happy. Picking only happy customers breaks Google’s rules.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my trade business on Google Maps without showing my home address?
Create or edit your profile as a service-area business, hide the address, and list the towns or postcodes you cover. You still verify the address privately with Google.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
The usual reasons are an unverified or suspended profile, the wrong primary category, too few reviews compared with nearby rivals, or the searcher being outside your service area.
How do I remove a fake review?
Flag it in your profile as violating Google’s policies, then use the review management tool to track it. Reply calmly in public meanwhile. Google removes reviews that break its rules, not reviews that are simply negative.
Does my Google profile affect AI answers?
Yes. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode cite Business Profiles heavily for local questions, so a complete, active profile helps you there too. Read how tradespeople get recommended by ChatGPT.
