AUGUST 2026 UPDATE · TIME-SENSITIVE

Google began the LSA to Performance Max migration for US home-service verticals in August 2026. UK trades follow in 2027 (Google confirmed). If you run LSAs today, the reporting shift, the algorithmic bid changes and the loss of the exact-match “in your area” targeting are the three things to prepare for. Full UK migration guide.

Google Local Service Ads Explained: UK Guide for Trades (2026)

Google Local Service Ads (LSAs) are pay-per-lead ads that sit at the very top of Google search for local service queries in the UK, above the paid ads and above the map pack. Each listing shows the business name, a star rating, the phone number, service area and a green Google Verified badge. You only pay when a customer contacts you, but Google no longer lets you dispute bad leads by hand, so rate every lead and keep service areas, job types and hours tight. For UK trades, LSA costs typically fall between GBP 15 and GBP 45 per qualified lead and GBP 25 to GBP 70 per booked job depending on trade and region.

Need help getting LSA verified and running?

We manage LSA for 40+ UK trades on a flat monthly fee. No percentage-of-spend billing. Every lead rated, with service areas, job types and hours kept tight. See the pricing.

TL;DR

  • LSAs are pay-per-lead, not pay-per-click. You only pay when a customer contacts you.
  • Every LSA business is Google Verified, which means Google vetted your licence, insurance and background checks.
  • Typical UK cost per lead sits between GBP 15 and GBP 45. Cost per booked job runs GBP 25 to GBP 70.
  • Ranking is driven by review quality, response time, service area proximity and bid.
  • Eligible UK trades include plumbers, electricians, roofers, heating engineers, gas engineers, painters, joiners, plasterers, locksmiths, garage door installers, appliance repair, house cleaners and more.

What are Google Local Service Ads?

Local Service Ads are a Google ad format designed specifically for local service businesses. Unlike Google Ads, which run auctions on keywords and charge per click, LSAs are auctioned per query and billed per lead. When someone in the UK searches a service query like “plumber near me” or “emergency electrician Leeds”, Google shows a carousel of two or three LSA listings at the very top of the results, above the map pack and above the sponsored Search Ads.

Each LSA listing shows the trader’s business name, average star rating, review count, years in business, service area, opening hours and the Google Verified badge. The customer taps the listing and gets your phone number or a Google-hosted message form. Google records the interaction, evaluates whether it is a genuine lead, and charges you accordingly.

How Local Service Ads differ from Google Ads (PPC)

Feature Local Service Ads Google Ads (PPC)
You pay for Qualified leads (calls or messages) Clicks (whether the click contacts you or not)
Position on page Very top, above map and PPC Below LSA carousel
Trust signal Google Verified badge “Sponsored” label
Setup complexity Licence, insurance and background verification Keywords, ad copy and landing page
Refund on bad leads No manual disputes No
Best for Established local trades ready to answer the phone Wider reach, service pages, remarketing

What is the Google Verified badge?

Google Verified is a background-check programme. To earn the badge in the UK you must supply your business licence where applicable, proof of public liability insurance and a passed check by Google’s third-party vetting partner. Once approved, if a customer complains about the quality of work Google can reimburse them up to a set amount (currently GBP 2,000 per lifetime cap in the UK). The badge is the reason LSA click-through rates outperform standard PPC ads for the same query.

Which UK trades are eligible for Local Service Ads?

Google has expanded LSA coverage in the UK significantly through 2025 and 2026. Eligible trade categories now include:

  • Plumbers including emergency plumbers, boiler repair and drainage.
  • Electricians including domestic, commercial and EV charger installers.
  • Heating engineers and gas engineers including boiler installers and Gas Safe registered engineers.
  • Roofers including flat roofers, tilers and roof repair specialists.
  • Painters and decorators, interior and exterior.
  • Locksmiths, 24-hour emergency and commercial.
  • Appliance repair including washing machine, dishwasher and cooker engineers.
  • Garage door installers and repair.
  • House cleaners including regular domestic and end-of-tenancy.
  • Handyman services covering small jobs and multi-trade work.

Additional trades are being onboarded region by region. Not every category is live in every UK postcode yet, so check the Local Services Ads sign-up screen for your service area before you plan a campaign.

How much do Local Service Ads cost in the UK?

UK cost per lead varies by trade and region. Based on live campaigns we manage across Yorkshire and the north of England:

  • Low-cost regions (Wakefield, Doncaster, Barnsley): typically GBP 15 to GBP 22 per lead.
  • Mid-cost regions (Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool): typically GBP 22 to GBP 32 per lead.
  • High-cost regions (London, Birmingham, Bristol): typically GBP 30 to GBP 45 per lead.

Cost per booked job (the lead you actually convert) runs GBP 25 to GBP 70 depending on how quickly you answer the phone. The single biggest lever on cost is response time. LSA leads that get answered inside five minutes convert at roughly double the rate of leads answered after twenty minutes, and because Google no longer lets you dispute bad leads by hand, tight service areas, job types and hours are what keep the effective cost down.

What decides your LSA ranking on Google?

Google does not publish an exact ranking formula, but four factors reliably move position in the carousel:

  1. Review count and average star rating. Reviews are pulled through the linked Google Business Profile. A 4.7+ average with 30+ reviews is the practical minimum to compete in most trade categories.
  2. Response time. Google tracks how fast you answer calls and message enquiries. Under five minutes is the target.
  3. Proximity to searcher. LSAs favour traders closer to the searcher’s postcode within your declared service area.
  4. Weekly budget and bid. A higher maximum bid buys reach into more competitive queries, but reviews and response time still outweigh raw spend.

Pros and cons of Google Local Service Ads for UK trades

Pros Cons
  • Top-of-page placement above PPC
  • Pay only for real leads, not clicks
  • Google Verified badge lifts trust
  • Rate every lead to help train the system
  • Cheaper leads than Bark or Checkatrade
  • Reviews reused from your existing GBP
  • Verification takes 3 to 14 days
  • Requires an active Google Business Profile
  • Response-time pressure: you must answer fast
  • No manual dispute button for bad leads
  • Not every trade category is live in every UK region

How to set up Google Local Service Ads in the UK (step by step)

  1. Confirm eligibility. Visit Google’s Local Services Ads sign-up and enter your postcode and trade category. If your area is live, you can proceed.
  2. Complete Google Verified verification. Upload your business licence where applicable, proof of public liability insurance and consent to background checks. Verification usually completes inside two weeks.
  3. Set your service area and hours. Choose the postcodes and radius you cover. Keep hours realistic: Google penalises missed calls.
  4. Link your Google Business Profile. Your existing reviews and star rating flow straight into the ad.
  5. Set a weekly budget. Start conservative: Google auto-adjusts your effective bid to hit your budget.
  6. Set up call tracking and lead rating. Ensure every LSA call is answered inside five minutes and rate every lead and log which were nuisance or spam, so you know your true return.

LSA vs Bark vs Checkatrade: the short version

LSAs beat both major UK trades directories on cost per booked job and lead exclusivity. Bark forwards each enquiry to up to five traders and charges a credit fee to reply, whether the customer picks you or not. Checkatrade charges a monthly fee starting around GBP 90 and lead pricing on top. LSAs charge only for real leads and only for calls that reach your business. Frequently asked questions about Local Service Ads in the UK

Are Local Service Ads available across the UK in 2026?

Yes for most major service categories, but coverage is region and trade specific. LSAs are live for plumbers, electricians, heating engineers, roofers, painters, locksmiths, house cleaners and more across most of England, Scotland and Wales. Some rural postcodes and specialist trades are still being onboarded.

How much does a Local Service Ad lead cost in the UK?

Typically GBP 15 to GBP 45 per qualified lead. Cost per booked job runs GBP 25 to GBP 70. Wakefield, Doncaster and Barnsley sit at the low end. Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool sit in the middle. London and Birmingham sit at the high end.

Are Local Service Ads better than Google Ads for trades?

They are the better first move for established local trades ready to answer the phone. LSAs deliver higher-intent leads at lower cost per booked job, and you only pay for real enquiries. Google Ads (PPC) becomes the right layer once you have LSA running and want to scale into service-page traffic, remarketing and non-LSA queries.

Do Local Service Ads use the same reviews as my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Your GBP reviews and star rating flow straight into your LSA listing. A 4.7+ average with 30+ reviews is the practical minimum to compete in most trade categories.

How long does Google Verified verification take in the UK?

Typically 3 to 14 days from submission. The bottleneck is usually the background check on the business owner. Have your business licence, insurance certificate and identity documents ready before you apply.

Can I dispute LSA charges for bad leads?

Not any more. Google has removed the manual dispute button for Local Services Ads, so you can no longer send a form to contest a lead. Charged leads are now reviewed automatically. In the US and Canada that review can credit invalid leads such as spam, duplicates, wrong numbers and robocalls within about 30 days, but Google’s help page lists advertisers in EMEA, which includes the UK, as excluded from automatic lead credits. Calls for job types you do not offer or from outside your service area are billed and cannot be disputed, and Google now charges for missed calls during opening hours when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds (announced for the US first). You can still rate every lead in your dashboard, which helps train Google’s system but does not guarantee a credit. So the real protection is the set-up: tight service areas, only the job types you actually do, an ad schedule that matches when you can answer, and a log of every lead so you know your true return.

What is a good response time for Local Service Ads?

Under five minutes. Google tracks response time and it is a ranking factor. LSA leads answered inside five minutes convert at roughly double the rate of leads answered after twenty minutes.

Do Local Service Ads work for one-person trade businesses?

Yes, provided you can answer the phone reliably during your published hours. If you regularly miss calls, LSAs will hurt more than they help: Google demotes traders with poor response and the missed leads still count against your quality signals.

How much should I budget for Local Service Ads per week in the UK?

A viable starting point for most trades is GBP 200 to GBP 400 per week, scaling once you have 30+ reviews and a clean lead history. High-CPL London plumbing and heating tend to need GBP 500+ per week to sustain visibility.

Do Local Service Ads replace SEO for UK trades?

No. LSAs win the top of the search page but SEO wins the map pack, organic results and long-tail queries. The strongest UK trade marketing programmes run both: LSAs to catch immediate high-intent queries and SEO to build long-term visibility across service pages and location content.

The bottom line

Local Service Ads are the single best paid channel for most UK trades in 2026. Cost per booked job is lower than Bark, Checkatrade or standard Google Ads. The Google Verified badge does more work on trust than any other paid ad format. Setup is disciplined but not complex, and once running the channel is largely self-optimising as long as you answer the phone fast.
