Most Leeds trades are hard to find on Google because their Business Profiles are thin: too few reviews, no website link, missing photos and missing opening hours. In our study of 320 Leeds trade listings, nearly 6 in 10 had fewer than 10 Google reviews and 1 in 5 had none at all. The good news is that almost every gap we found is something a trade can fix itself, for free, in an afternoon.

This is the plain-English companion to our full report, the Leeds Trades Google Gap 2026 study. Below is what we found, why it matters when a customer searches for a plumber, electrician or roofer in Leeds, and the practical fixes that close the gap.

What did the Leeds Trades Google Gap study look at?

We analysed 320 Google Business Profile listings for eight trades within 10 km of Leeds city centre: plumbers, electricians, heating and gas engineers, roofers, builders, locksmiths, landscapers and gardeners, and painters and decorators. The data was retrieved on 27 September 2026. The full method, including what was excluded, is on the study page.

Why are Leeds trades hard to find on Google?

Google says local results are mainly based on three things: relevance (how well a profile matches the search), distance, and how well-known a business is, which it calls prominence. Its tips for improving local ranking include verifying your profile, keeping your information complete and accurate, replying to reviews and adding photos (Google Business Profile Help).

Our study found that a large share of Leeds trades are missing the basics on every one of those fronts.

Most listings have very few reviews

  • 59.7% of listings (191 of 320) have fewer than 10 Google reviews.
  • The median listing has just 6 reviews.
  • 20.3% have no reviews at all.

Reviews are also heavily concentrated. The best-reviewed 32 listings, 10% of the sample, hold 61.2% of all 8,046 reviews we counted (Unavoidable Marketing research, 2026). A small group of trades collect most of the social proof.

A 5-star rating does not make you stand out

Of the 129 listings with 10 or more reviews, 80.6% are rated 4.8 or higher. When almost everyone established has a near-perfect score, the star rating stops separating you from competitors. What customers notice instead is how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and whether you reply to them.

A third of listings have no website

33.4% of listings (107 of 320) show no website link. Those listings have a median of 1 review, against 13 for listings that link to a site, and 88.8% of them have fewer than 10 reviews (Unavoidable Marketing research, 2026). That shows a link rather than a cause, but the trades without a website have the weakest profiles overall.

Almost 1 in 4 profiles appear unclaimed

24.4% of listings (78 of 320) did not show as owner-verified. Of those, 97.4% have fewer than 5 photos and their median is 1 review. An unclaimed profile is one nobody is looking after, so it cannot answer reviews, update hours or add photos.

Photos and opening hours are missing

  • 47.2% of listings (151 of 320) have fewer than 5 photos.
  • 20.0% (64 of 320) list no opening hours at all.

For a customer with a leaking pipe, a profile with no photos and no hours gives no reason to ring you over the next result.

What can a Leeds trade fix itself this week?

None of these fixes need an agency or a budget, and they match Google’s own local ranking tips.

  1. Claim and verify your profile. Google says verification “tells Google that you’re authorised to represent the business, so it’s more likely to show up in search results” (Google Business Profile Help). If you have never logged in to your listing, start here.
  2. Pick the right primary category. Choose the one category that best matches what customers search for, then add only the additional categories you genuinely offer. Our guide to Google Business Profile categories for trades walks through it trade by trade.
  3. List your services. Add each job you want, in the words customers use, such as “boiler repair” or “flat roof repair”, so Google can match you to the right searches.
  4. Add a website link. Even a simple site with your services, areas covered, accreditations and contact details gives Google and customers more to go on.
  5. Upload real photos. Nearly half of Leeds trade listings have fewer than 5. Add real photos of your van, your team and finished jobs, and keep adding new ones as you complete work. No stock images.
  6. Set your opening hours. One in five listings shows none. Add your normal hours and any special hours for bank holidays, and say clearly if you offer emergency call-outs.
  7. Reply to every review. Google says replying “shows that you value their feedback” and that positive reviews and helpful replies can help a business stand out (Google Business Profile Help). Thank people by name, keep it short and answer any complaint calmly and politely.

A word on reviews and Google’s rules

Reviews should come from real customers, freely given. Google’s policy bans offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free work in exchange for a review, and bans selectively asking only happy customers (Google Maps user contributed content policy). Reviews that break these rules can be removed.

Does fixing your profile guarantee a spot in the map pack?

No. Distance from the person searching is something you cannot change, and competition varies by trade and postcode. What a complete, well-kept profile does is remove the easy reasons for Google and customers to pass you over. If you have done the basics and still do not appear, our guide on why your Google Business Profile is not showing in the map pack covers the next layer of checks.

What does this mean for Leeds trades in 2026?

The gap is an opportunity. When most local competitors have a handful of reviews, few photos and no website link, a trade that gets the basics right has a real chance to stand out. You do not need to beat the top 10% overnight, just be clearly more complete and active than the average listing, and our study shows the average is low.
