Trust and reputation for trades, UK guide

Trust signals that win jobs: what UK customers check before they call a tradesperson

By Andrew Heppinstall, founder of Unavoidable Marketing, Leeds. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Before they call, most customers check four things: recent reviews, the right registration for the job (for example Gas Safe for gas work or NICEIC or NAPIT for electrical work), proof of real past jobs, and clear details of who you are and where you work. Showing these prominently on your website, Google Business Profile and quotes wins more work than any slogan, and it is also what AI assistants look for when they recommend a trade.

The trust signals that matter, by type

Signal Why customers care Where to show it
Genuine reviews The first thing most people read. Recent reviews matter more than old ones. Google profile, website home page, quotes
Legal registrations Gas Safe for gas work is a legal requirement. Electrical work needs Part P compliance, usually through a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. Website header or footer, Google profile, van, quotes
Trade bodies and schemes TrustMark, NFRC or CompetentRoofer, FMB, OFTEC, MCS for heat pumps and solar, and others show standards and give customers somewhere to complain. Website, quotes, Google profile description
Google Verified badge Shows Google has checked your business, licences and insurance. It appears on Local Services Ads. Earned through Local Services Ads
Insurance and guarantees Public liability insurance and written workmanship guarantees remove risk for the customer. Website, quotes
Photos of real jobs Proof you have done this exact kind of work before. Never use stock images. Website gallery, Google profile, social media
Clear identity A real name, phone number, address or service area, and company details. Anonymous traders lose to visible ones. Everywhere, kept identical

Rented reputation versus owned reputation

Reviews on lead sites belong to the platform. If you stop paying, they can disappear from view. Reviews on your Google Business Profile and your own website stay with you. Many trades use lead sites to get started; the long-term goal should be a reputation you own.

A five-minute trust check for your business

  1. Search your business name on Google. Do you see a complete profile with recent reviews?
  2. Open your website on your phone. Can a customer see your registrations and reviews without scrolling?
  3. Are your name, number and area identical on your website, Google and Facebook?
  4. Do your quotes include your registrations, insurance and guarantee?
  5. Have you added photos of a real job this month?

Frequently asked questions

Which trust badge do customers recognise most?

Customers look first for the registration that applies to the job, such as Gas Safe, then for reviews. Scheme badges help most when they are explained in one line, not just shown as a logo.

Do trust badges help me appear in AI answers?

They help AI assistants describe and recommend you accurately, especially when your registrations, reviews and business details are consistent across your website, Google profile and trade body listings.

Should I put my prices on my website?

Price ranges or from prices build trust and filter out time-wasters. Exact prices are often impossible in trades, but a range plus what affects it is a strong signal.
