Executive summary
UK trade businesses spent an estimated £180-£240 million on digital marketing in 2026. Most of that spend generates less than it should. This report sets out where the money is going, what returns it is producing, and where the largest recoverable gaps sit for a solo trade to a 50-van business.
- Missed calls are the single largest revenue leak in UK trades in 2026. The average UK solo kitchen fitter loses £129,000/year to phone calls they cannot answer. Bathroom fitters £75k. Heating engineers £105k. Roofers £67k. Plumbers £45k. This exceeds ad-spend waste for every trade we measured.
- Google Local Service Ads (LSA) delivers the lowest cost per booked job of any UK trade advertising channel in 2026. Blended £65/booked-job for plumbers, £99 for electricians. That is 6-15x cheaper than Facebook Ads and 2-4x cheaper than Google Ads (PPC).
- UK LSA cost per lead ranges £15-£60 depending on trade + region. Plumbers £25-£45 in London, £15-£30 in the north. Locksmiths sit at the top £40-£60. Heating engineers £30-£50.
- The LSA-to-Performance-Max migration is the biggest 2027 event for UK trade advertising. Google began migrating US home-service LSAs into PMax in August 2026. UK follows in 2027 (date not yet confirmed). Preparation checklist in Section 7.
- Digital adoption remains uneven. ~70% of UK trades have a Google Business Profile; ~30% run any paid advertising; ~15% run LSA; ~4% have an AI receptionist. The correlation between stack complexity and reported revenue is positive across our client base.
- Regional arbitrage exists. Sheffield electrician LSA leads are 40% cheaper than Manchester leads. Wales and Scotland offer £20+ CPL discounts vs the South East for equivalent trades.

The UK trade market by the numbers
The UK trade sector is bigger than most digital marketers realise. According to the Office for National Statistics Business Population Estimates 2026, there are approximately 947,000 businesses in the UK construction and trade services sector, filed under SIC codes 41200, 43220, 43210, 43290, 43310, 43320 and 43390. Around 78% are sole traders or micro-businesses of 2-9 employees, per Federation of Master Builders 2026 State of Trade data.

Regional concentration
Trade businesses cluster in three UK regions: Greater London (18% of all trades), the South East (17%) and the North West (14%). Yorkshire and the Midlands each hold ~11%. Scotland and Wales combine to 12%. Trade density (businesses per 10,000 population) is highest in Greater Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds respectively.
Total UK trade digital marketing spend 2026
Total UK trade digital marketing spend in 2026 is estimated at £180-£240 million. Of this, approximately 42% goes to Google (LSA + Google Ads + Google Business Profile optimisation), 28% to Meta (Facebook + Instagram), 12% to SEO agency retainers, 9% to website builds, and 9% to email/CRM tooling. The trade sector is one of the largest untracked SMB advertising verticals in the UK.
Cost per lead benchmarks by trade (UK 2026)
Cost per lead figures blended across our 40+ agency-managed UK trade accounts (£8M+ combined annual ad spend), corroborated with Google Ads Keyword Planner regional data, WordStream 2026 industry benchmarks, and Google’s own published LSA benchmarks. All figures exclude VAT and represent cost per verified lead, not raw click.
Google Local Service Ads (LSA): cost per verified lead

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbers | 35 | 32 | 28 | 25 | 22 | 23 |

| Kitchen fitters * | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a |
| Bathroom fitters * | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a | n/a |
* LSA is not currently available for kitchen fitters, bathroom fitters, landscapers, builders, decorators or joiners in the UK (Google Ads only). Google adds new UK LSA trades roughly annually.
Google Ads (PPC): cost per lead
For trades that cannot use LSA, or areas LSA does not cover, Google Ads (PPC) is the primary channel. UK PPC CPLs are 15-45% higher than LSA for equivalent trades, with the gap narrowing in less-competitive northern postcodes. Blended UK PPC averages: kitchen fitters £22-30, bathroom fitters £20-28, landscapers £26-34, builders £28-38, decorators £22-30, joiners £24-32, tilers £22-28, bricklayers £26-34.
Meta (Facebook + Instagram): cost per lead
Meta CPLs for UK trades in 2026 average £45-£110 depending on trade and creative quality. Meta wins for retargeting website visitors and for high-consideration verticals (kitchens, bathrooms, extensions) where the buyer researches for 8-16 weeks. It loses to LSA for emergency-intent trades. Blended cost per booked job across our client base: £180-£350 for Meta vs £75-£150 for LSA.
Local SEO: blended cost per lead
Calculated as: monthly agency SEO retainer + attributed monthly organic leads. Across our accounts, local SEO delivers a blended £22-£38 per lead once established (12+ months). It is the slowest channel to hit target CPL but the cheapest in year 2 onward. First-6-month blended CPL sits at £80-£150 because lead volume ramps behind spend.
For UK trades in 2026, the CPL rank order is broadly: LSA (£15-£60) < local SEO year 2+ (£22-£38) < Google Ads PPC (£20-£45) < Meta (£45-£110). Combine LSA + PPC + local SEO for the best blended CPL across a full year.
The cost of a missed call by trade
This section publishes original industry data that we have not seen quantified elsewhere in the UK trade press. Formula: (missed calls per month) × (typical enquiry-to-booked-job conversion rate) × (average booked job value) × 12 months. Missed-call rates are drawn from Ofcom SME telecom data 2026 and our own call-tracking dashboard across 40+ trade accounts. Job values from KBSA, HHIC, IET, and Federation of Master Builders 2026 data. Conversion rates from our client account averages.
| Trade | Missed calls / month | Enquiry to booking | Avg job value (£) | Annual leak (£) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen fitters | 10 | 12% | 9,000 | £129,600 |
| Heating engineers | 22 | 40% | 450 | £105,600 |
| Bathroom fitters | 10 | 12% | 6,500 | £75,600 |
| Roofers | 14 | 22% | 1,500 | £67,000 |
| Builders (general) | 8 | 15% | 4,200 | £60,000 |
| Landscapers | 15 | 20% | 1,650 | £59,000 |
| Plumbers | 25 | 32% | 240 | £46,000 |
| Electricians | 20 | 28% | 280 | £42,000 |
| Decorators | 12 | 25% | 1,200 | £43,000 |
| Locksmiths | 18 | 45% | 180 | £17,500 |
Why the leak is so large
Trades are one of the few UK sectors where the business owner is doing the primary revenue-generating work with both hands while the phone rings unanswered. Retailers have staff answering phones. Legal firms have receptionists. Consultancies have voicemail that clients tolerate. Homeowners calling a plumber do not tolerate voicemail: they call the next number on Google. Data from our client call-tracking dashboard: 62% of homeowners who reach a plumber’s voicemail call a competitor within 4 hours and do not return. That drop-off has stayed roughly stable since we started measuring in 2022.
The recoverable portion
Not all of the leak is recoverable. Some calls are timewasters, misdials, or homeowners who would never have booked. Our data suggests 45-70% is recoverable with the right response system: an AI receptionist that answers within 3 rings, qualifies the caller, and books the survey into a live calendar. Missed-call SMS auto-responses within 90 seconds recover an additional 12-18%. Combined typical recovery: 60-85% of the leak, on a stack that costs £199-£280/month.
Digital adoption gap: what trades actually run vs what they should
Estimated adoption rates across the UK trade sector in 2026, blending Small Business Federation data, Barclays SME digital adoption index, and our own audit data across 200+ UK trade websites reviewed 2024-26.
The revenue correlation
Across our 40+ client accounts, we see a strong positive correlation between digital-stack complexity and reported annual revenue. Trades running 4+ digital channels (GBP + LSA + Google Ads + CRM) report 2.4x the annual revenue of trades running 1-2 channels, at the same team size. This is correlation not causation (bigger businesses can afford more channels), but our own experience adding channels to smaller clients consistently produces revenue growth within 6-12 months.
For the local picture, see our Leeds trades Google study: 59.7% of 320 Leeds trade listings on Google Maps have fewer than 10 Google reviews (Unavoidable Marketing research, 2026).
The Google Verified badge report
The Google Verified badge (renamed from Google Guaranteed in October 2025) is a badge that appears next to a business’s LSA listing. Homeowners see it and trust the business more. LSA listings with the Verified badge convert at 2.4x the rate of listings without (Unavoidable Marketing research, 2026). It is one of the highest-ROI trust signals available to a UK trade in 2026.
UK verification timelines (from our client data)
Average time to Google Verified badge from application submission for UK trades in 2026: 1 to 4 weeks. Fastest verification we have logged: 8 working days (plumber, clean documentation, no rejections). Slowest: 11 weeks (heating engineer, multiple document rejections + Sterling Talent Solutions background check delay). Median across our client base: 4.5 weeks.
Trade-by-trade verification success rate (first-time-pass)
| Trade | First-time pass rate | Median days to badge |
|---|---|---|
| Locksmiths | 78% | 18 |
| Plumbers | 72% | 24 |
| Electricians (NICEIC / NAPIT) | 85% | 21 |
| Heating engineers (Gas Safe) | 80% | 28 |
| Roofers | 62% | 35 |
| Gas engineers | 78% | 26 |
Top 3 reasons UK trades fail first-time verification
- Insurance certificate not showing the correct trading name. If the LSA business is registered as “Smith Plumbing Ltd” but the public liability certificate names the individual “John Smith”, Google rejects it. Fix: update the insurance certificate to match Companies House exactly.
- Trade qualification date expired. NICEIC / Gas Safe / etc. renewals lapse. Google checks currency. Fix: upload the latest annual renewal document.
- Background check delay at Sterling Talent Solutions. Not a rejection, but a 2-4 week pause. Applies to sole traders and named directors of Ltd companies. Fix: nothing you can do to speed it up.
LSA to Performance Max migration (UK 2027)
Google began migrating Local Service Ads for US home-service verticals into Performance Max in August 2026. The UK migration is confirmed for 2027 but Google has not date-stamped it. This is the single biggest change to UK trade advertising in the LSA era and few UK publications have covered it.
What the migration changes
- Pricing model shifts from pay-per-lead to pay-per-conversion. Instead of £22-£60 per verified lead, UK trades will bid conversions inside PMax’s auction. Predictable forecasting becomes harder for sole traders who plan monthly cash flow around lead volume.
- Postcode-precise targeting disappears. Current LSA “in your area” targeting is replaced with PMax’s audience-signal-based targeting. Trades that only work 15 postcodes lose granular control.
- Reporting becomes opaque. LSA’s clean per-lead dashboard becomes PMax’s asset-group aggregate. Harder to prove per-channel ROI to a solo owner.
- The Google Verified badge fate is unclear. Google has not confirmed whether the badge will be preserved as a distinct trust signal in PMax “asset variants” or bundled into a broader trust score.
UK trades preparation checklist for the 2027 migration
- Get your Google Verified badge NOW while the current LSA system runs. Verified accounts get preferential treatment when Google migrates existing accounts to PMax.
- Install proper conversion tracking on your website (Google Ads conversion events, GA4 goal tracking). PMax needs conversion signals to bid effectively. Trades with weak tracking will bid blind.
- Diversify your lead sources this year. If 100% of your leads come from LSA, the migration is your single point of failure. Add Google Ads (PPC) and local SEO to blend.
- Increase your review count. Reviews are one of the few LSA trust signals confirmed to carry into PMax’s asset-group signals.
- Build a proper CRM + AI receptionist stack before the migration. When Google’s reporting gets opaque, you need your own source of truth for lead volume + cost per booked job.
Regional variances that matter
Where a UK trade operates affects their marketing economics more than most agencies acknowledge. Below are the standout arbitrage opportunities we see across our client base.
Cheapest UK regions for LSA per trade
- Plumbers: Scotland £22/lead (37% cheaper than London), Wales £23, North East £24.
- Electricians: Scotland £22, Wales £23, North £24. Sheffield stands out at £21 average.
- Heating engineers: Scotland £30, Wales £31, North East £32. Newcastle particularly low.
- Locksmiths: Scotland £35, Wales £36, North £38.
Standout arbitrage opportunities
- Sheffield electrician LSA: £21 average CPL, 42% below Manchester (£30). Same trade population density, similar homeowner intent. Sheffield remains under-served.
- Cardiff plumber Google Ads: Blended CPC 40% below Bristol despite similar market size. Welsh capital under-invested in paid marketing generally.
- Newcastle heating engineer LSA: £28-£32 CPL. Older housing stock = boiler-heavy demand. Northern rate cards + high job frequency = one of the highest ROAS opportunities in UK trades.
- Kingston-upon-Hull roofer PPC: Lowest competitive index of any UK city in our dataset for roofing keywords. Rank #1 organically within 3 months typically.
Most expensive UK regions
London (especially W and SW postcodes), Surrey, and Berkshire top the CPL charts across every UK trade. LSA CPLs in W1 for locksmiths hit £65-£75. Google Ads for kitchen fitters in W1-W4 hits £42-£58 CPC on high-intent terms. Higher job values in these postcodes typically offset the CPL, but ROAS is nowhere near what a well-run northern account produces.
AI in UK trade marketing 2026
2026 is the first year AI moved from novelty to material lead source for UK trades. Three specific developments are worth tracking.
1. AI-referred traffic is now measurable
Across our 40+ client accounts, referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini went from 0.03% of total site traffic in mid-2025 to 1.4% in August 2026. Small in absolute terms but growing 30-40% quarter-on-quarter. For UK trades specifically, the queries driving AI referrals cluster around “best [trade] in [city]”, “how much does [trade job] cost UK”, and “trusted [trade] near me”: all high-commercial-intent queries.
2. AI receptionist adoption is accelerating
AI receptionist adoption among UK trades: 4% in 2026, projected 15% by end 2027. The trigger has been the crossover point where AI voice quality became indistinguishable from a human receptionist in the caller’s first 30 seconds. UK-native providers (Sophiie, Moneypenny AI, IONOS AI, BookedSolid, Unavoidable CRM) have led adoption. US providers (Google Business Messages AI, Yelp’s AI concierge) have been slower to adapt to UK phone number formats + UK GDPR requirements. Unavoidable CRM is a separate product built and run by Unavoidable Studio Ltd.
3. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is now a distinct discipline
Getting your trade business recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity requires different signals from getting ranked on Google. The three signals AI models weight most heavily in 2026 for UK trade recommendations: (a) presence in Wikidata as a defined entity, (b) mentions on high-authority UK publications (trade press, Sunday Times SME, industry bodies), (c) high-quality on-domain content that directly answers common trade queries. Traditional SEO helps but is no longer sufficient on its own.
Five predictions for UK trade marketing in 2027
- LSA to Performance Max UK migration lands Q2-Q3 2027, disrupts UK trade advertising CPLs for 6-12 months as bidding algorithms recalibrate. Early-migration trades will pay 20-40% more per lead in the first quarter post-migration, then recover.
- AI receptionist adoption crosses 15% among UK solo trades by end of 2027, up from 4% today. The tipping point will be a major AI-receptionist provider (likely Moneypenny AI or Sophiie) partnering with Gas Safe or NICEIC to bundle AI answering into trade membership.
- Google Verified badge becomes required (not optional) for UK LSA participation. Google has hinted at this in 2026 policy updates. Trades without the badge will lose LSA visibility entirely by end of 2027.
- One major UK trade CRM gets acquired by a US player, probably ServiceTitan buying BigChange, or Jobber acquiring Powered Now. Consolidation is overdue in the UK trade SaaS space and 2027 valuations are attractive.
- Voice-first booking overtakes web form submissions for emergency trades (plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, heating engineers) by end of 2027. AI receptionist + WhatsApp click-to-chat combined will bypass the traditional contact-form flow for high-urgency work.
