The 30-second answer

LSA is exclusive, verified and 4x cheaper per booked job. Bark is faster to start.

Google Local Service Ads produces exclusive verified leads at £22.40 average, converting at 34% for £65 per booked job. Bark charges credits (roughly £12 to £30 per lead credit) but the same lead is sold to 3 to 5 competing tradespeople, dropping conversion to 8% and lifting cost per booked job to around £260. LSA should be your primary channel once verified. Bark is useful for immediate lead volume while LSA verification is in progress.

Why LSA outperforms Bark for UK trades

Four structural reasons LSA books more jobs per pound spent.

Lead exclusivity vs shared bidding

LSA leads are exclusive to you. When a customer contacts you via LSA, they contact only you. Bark sells the same lead to 3 to 5 competing tradespeople. Even if you respond fastest, you’re one of several quotes the customer will consider.

Google verification vs open marketplace

Google confirms Gas Safe, Part P, insurance and DBS before you can advertise on LSA. Anyone can sign up to Bark as a professional with minimal checks, so lead quality is more variable and customer trust is lower.

Pay for real enquiries vs pay for credits

LSA charges only when a customer contacts you through the ad. Bark charges credits to respond to a lead. If you decide not to respond after seeing the lead detail, you save the credit. But if you respond and the customer picks a competitor, you lose the credit and the job.

Google Guaranteed badge vs Bark badge

The Google Guaranteed badge appears above every regular Google search result and is widely trusted by UK customers. The Bark badge appears within the Bark platform only. Trust translates directly into higher call rates from LSA.

When to use each channel

Bark still has legitimate use cases for UK trades.

Use Google Local Service Ads when

  • You want exclusive leads that don’t go to competitors
  • You are Gas Safe, Part P, NICEIC or scheme-qualified
  • You want the Google Guaranteed badge on all your ads
  • You need booked jobs long-term with predictable cost per job
  • You can respond to leads within 5 to 15 minutes
  • You are willing to complete the 2 to 4 week verification

Use Bark when

  • You need immediate lead volume while LSA verification is in progress
  • You work in a service Google LSA doesn’t cover (some niche categories)
  • You want to fill capacity gaps between LSA campaigns
  • You are a very fast responder who can beat competitors on quote speed
  • You service rural areas where LSA search volume is thin
  • You are testing a new service line before investing in LSA verification

Frequently asked questions

Should I run LSA and Bark at the same time?

Only during the 2 to 4 week LSA verification period. Once LSA is live, most UK trades stop using Bark because cost per booked job is 3 to 4x higher. If you have capacity to burn, Bark can still fill gaps, but it’s not primary spend.

How many tradespeople see the same Bark lead?

Officially Bark limits it to 5 responses per lead. In practice, most leads are sold to 3 to 5 tradespeople. The customer receives all 5 quotes and picks. You need to respond in the first 5 to 10 minutes to be seriously considered.

Can you refund Bark credits if the lead is bad?

Bark has a limited refund policy for clearly fake or duplicate leads. Refund success rate on legitimate disputes is around 40 to 50% based on our client audits. LSA disputes have a much higher approval rate (85% on well-argued cases).

What is the minimum weekly budget for each?

LSA: £100 to £250 per week for a single-city trade. Bark: £60 to £150 per week is common but you can spend as little as £20 per week by cherry-picking leads.

Does Bark work better in rural UK areas?

Sometimes, yes. LSA impressions correlate with local search volume, so rural areas produce fewer LSA leads. Bark can fill this gap because it aggregates leads from a broader UK footprint. Rural trades sometimes run both.

Is Bark suitable for higher-value quoted work?

For quoted work like bathroom refurbs or full rewires, Bark can work because customers accept a delay while comparing quotes. For emergency callouts, LSA is far superior because urgency + exclusivity wins.

Does Bark have a Google Guaranteed equivalent?

No. Bark has its own trust signals (verified checks, reviews, response rate badges) but nothing carrying Google’s brand weight. In UK customer surveys, the Google Guaranteed badge on LSA is trusted roughly 5x more than the Bark verified badge.
