Free Google Ads health check for trades

This free Google Ads health check asks 14 yes or no questions about your account, from who owns it and what gets tracked to where your ads show and when, then gives you a score out of 100 and a ranked list of the fixes that matter most. It is free, it runs in your browser, and there is no email or sign-up needed. Unavoidable Marketing is a UK-wide, Leeds-based agency that runs Google Ads for trade businesses across the UK, measured on booked jobs rather than clicks, and founder Andrew Heppinstall is on every strategy call.

Answer every question honestly. If you do not know, pick "Not sure". Your answers stay on this page and are not sent anywhere.

1.Do you own the Google Ads account and pay Google directly on your own card?

You are the admin, the account is in your business name, and the ad spend goes from your card straight to Google.

2.Is call tracking set up, so you can see which calls came from your ads?

Call extensions, calls from the website number, or a tracking number that records calls from ads.

3.Do you record which enquiries turned into booked jobs?

A simple sheet or your job software marking each ad enquiry as booked, quoted or dead, ideally fed back into Google Ads.

4.Is form tracking set up for quote requests and contact forms?

A form submission shows up as a conversion in Google Ads, not just a visit to the contact page.

5.Do you know your cost per booked job from Google Ads?

Ad spend for the month divided by the number of jobs you actually booked from those ads.

6.Is the location setting "Presence: people in or regularly in your locations"?

Not the default that also shows ads to people who are only interested in your area, wherever they are.

7.Do you check the search terms report at least every couple of weeks?

The list of what people actually typed before they clicked your ad.

8.Have your negative keywords been reviewed in the last month?

Words that stop your ads showing, such as "free", "jobs", "course", "DIY" or services you do not offer.

9.Are your campaigns split by job type?

For example emergency call-outs, installs and repairs in separate campaigns, each with its own budget and ads.

10.Do your ads go to a page for that service, not just your homepage?

Someone searching for a boiler repair lands on a boiler repair page with a phone number at the top.

11.Does your ad schedule match the hours someone can answer the phone?

Ads that run while nobody picks up turn paid clicks into missed calls.

12.If you run Performance Max, do you check where it spends and what leads it brings?

Answer Yes if you do not run Performance Max at all.

13.Does your budget change with the seasons in your trade?

More budget when your phone should ring most, less in the quiet months, planned ahead.

14.Do your ads mention your accreditations, reviews or guarantees?

For example Gas Safe, NICEIC, TrustMark, years trading, your review rating or a workmanship guarantee.

Why trades need a Google Ads health check

Most trade owners we speak to cannot say for sure whether their Google Ads make money. The ads run, the phone rings now and then, and a bill arrives every month. The account itself might have been set up years ago by someone who has since moved on, with settings nobody has looked at since.

This check is built around the mistakes we see most in plumbing, heating, electrical, roofing, building and other trade accounts. None of them need a big budget to fix. Most need an hour and someone who knows where to look.

How the score works

Every question carries a weight based on how much it affects your results. Ownership, call tracking and recording booked jobs carry the most, because without them you cannot judge anything else. Seasonal budgets and ad wording carry less, because they fine tune an account that already works. A “Yes” earns the full weight, and a “No” or “Not sure” earns nothing. Your fixes are then ranked by what you are missing out on, so the top of the list is where to start.

The score comes only from your own answers. Nothing is sent to us or to Google, and nothing is stored once you leave the page.

The three fixes that matter most

Own your account

If an agency or a freelancer holds your account, you could lose years of data the day you part ways. You should be the admin and the ad spend should go from your card straight to Google. We work that way with every client: ad spend is paid straight to Google on your own card and never marked up.

Track calls, forms and booked jobs

Google can only find more of what it can see. If it only sees clicks, it will chase clicks. Once it sees calls, form enquiries and which of those became booked jobs, you can judge the account on what matters: your cost per booked job.

Stop paying for the wrong searches

Search terms, negative keywords and location settings decide who sees your ads. Get them wrong and you pay for job hunters, DIY questions and people miles outside your area. Get them right and the same budget brings in more of the jobs you want.

What to do with your results

Work down the list from the top. If you score well, look at the fixes as fine tuning. If you score low, do not raise your budget yet: fix tracking and targeting first, then spend more once you can see what comes back. If you would rather have a second pair of eyes, book a free call and we will go through your account with you, whether or not you go on to work with us.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Google Ads health check really free?

Yes. It is free to use as often as you like, there is no email or sign-up, and your answers are not sent anywhere. The score is worked out in your browser from the answers you give.

What is a good Google Ads health check score for a trade business?

A score of 80 or more means the basics are in place and you are fine tuning. Between 50 and 79 there are gaps where money is leaking. Below 50, fix tracking and targeting before you spend more on budget.

Why does "Not sure" score the same as "No"?

If you cannot check something, you cannot rely on it. Treat a "Not sure" as a job to find out, ask whoever manages your account, and run the check again once you know.

Do I need access to my Google Ads account to use this?

No, you can answer from what you know. Having the account open helps with questions on location settings, search terms and conversions, and if you cannot get in at all, that is your first fix.

Should I turn off Performance Max?

Not always. It can work for trades with solid conversion tracking that records real enquiries and booked jobs. Without that tracking it tends to spend on places you would not choose, so get tracking right first and judge it on booked jobs.

Can you look at my Google Ads account for me?

Yes. Book a free 30-minute strategy call and we will go through your account with you. Unavoidable Marketing works with trades across the UK on a flat monthly fee quoted after the call, with no contract and rolling 30-day terms.
